September-Card of the Month - The Hermit
Major Arcana Card IX
This is a modern day rendition of the traditional Hermit Tarot card which depicts an older wise male, walking with his staff into the wilderness, holding a lantern containing one brightly lit star. In my version, the Hermit is a wise woman of color. She is a Black woman with natural hair wrapped in a headband, dressed in a grey knit sweater, olive utility parka, dark skirt, and leather boots.
Standing on an elevated urban terrace against a moody twilight skyline, she holds a brightly lit smartphone in one hand—her modern lantern—casting a warm glow over her face. In her other hand, she grips a rugged wooden walking stick, keeping her grounded in tradition while navigating the city. She’s stepping away from the chaos to do a digital and mental audit.
Instead of getting pulled into the constant noise, notifications, and opinions of the city below, she’s using her phone as an intentional torch—filtering through the screen to find actual light, truth, and clarity on her own terms. She’s walking her path, grounded by her staff, taking a deliberate pause to focus on what actually serves her before making her next move. She separates herself from the noise of the environment, choosing to focus only on what matters right now, her own needs.

In one hand, he’s holding up a lantern with a glowing, six-pointed star inside to light up the dark path, and in the other, he’s leaning on his trusty wooden walking stick. He’s looking back down the mountain, not with regret, but to see how far he’s come and to help guide anyone else who might be making the climb.
